Grading Policies and GPA

Grading and Assessment:
High school grades are assigned using the NC adopted grading scale which follows the JCPS Handbook (Policy 3400.)
All grades are recorded and posted to Infinite Campus on a weekly basis. Midterm progress reports are no longer posted in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal at the end of four and a half weeks for each 9-week grading period. However, parents can view student grades at any time through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Report cards are available at the end of each 9-week grading period for parent review in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Teacher/parent/student conferences can be arranged as needed to support the academic success of each student.
Course and Graduation:
All high school core courses are honors level with the exception of some foundations level courses and online courses taken through Edgenuity or NCVPS (examples: HOUSE, foundations of math, strategies for academic success, world languages, physical science, etc.) College courses that earn dual credit for high school and college are currently considered AP level courses in calculation of high school grade point average (GPA). Students who do not meet proficiency standards will have progress monitoring, at which times their progress towards proficiency will be reviewed and applied by a panel of teachers, support staff, academic advisor, and principal.
Early College students must meet all exit standards for graduation as required by JCPS (Board Policy 3460) and NCDPI Cooperative Innovative High Schools guidance.
Each college instructor provides a syllabus which includes the instructor’s grading scale which may or may not be the same as the JCPS grading scale. Homework for college courses can be referenced by reviewing the course syllabus and students can work in peer groups during free periods or individually during seminar times to complete and review college course work.
Students who must retake a class due to poor performance or poor attendance will be expected to pay for the cost of the tuition and books to retake the course. Before a student can drop a high school or college course, the student and the student’s parent will need to have a conference with the principal/designee.
SCC Course Withdrawals and Progress Monitoring:
At end of semester if final grade is D or F:
- If student receives a D:
- Earns SCC and high school credit towards associate degree but does not transfer to a university
- Placed in progress monitoring process to make sure the student is making progress towards graduation and their designated SCC pathway.
- Student may retake but must pay tuition and/or book fees.
- Student and parent must meet with principal/designee to decide if retaking class and make payment contract, or pay in full before registration.
- If student receives an F:
- Does not earn any SCC or high school credit.
- Depending on the number of failures, student could be at risk of not achieving SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress.)
- Student may retake but must pay tuition and/or book fees.
- Student must meet with principal/designee to decide if retaking class and make payment contract, or pay in full before registration.
During semester (at midterm) if current grade is less than 70 or C:
- Will be entered into progress monitoring.
How to initiate withdrawal during course:
- Approval from principal, parents, and academic advisor required first; then the academic advisor can withdraw student.
What is an automatic withdrawal:
- If at any time the instructor for the SCC course believes the student is not capable of recovering missed time or assignments, OR if the student misses more than the allowed absences (per class syllabus,) OR if the student's grades cannot calculate to a passing score, then the professor can automatically withdraw a student from a course. The student and academic advisor can reach out to the professor to attempt to create a plan to reinstate the student given that the student follows the determined plan, OR the student will retake the course or an equivalent course at a later date.
Students will earn approximately 60 credit hours to earn an Associate in Arts or Science degree from SCC or they will follow a pathway toward a certificate or diploma pathway as outlined and discussed with the academic advisor. A list of the required and elective credit choices can be found on the SCC website or in the Self-Service app on the mySCC portal.
How to Calculate GPA:
For each final course grade students earn, they receive a certain number of quality points. Standard, Honors and College courses earn different quality points. Standard courses are not weighted and do not receive additional quality points. Honors courses earn an extra 0.5 toward the Weighted GPA. College courses (there are some exceptions) earn an extra 1.0 point toward the Weighted GPA.
Standard Courses:
-
A (90 - 100) = 4 Quality Points
-
B (80 - 89) = 3 Quality Points
-
C (70 - 79) = 2 Quality Points
-
D (60 - 69) = 1 Quality Point
-
F (59 & below) = 0 Quality Points
Honors Courses:
-
A (90 - 100) = 4.5 Quality Points
-
B (80 - 89) = 3.5 Quality Points
-
C (70 - 79) = 2.5 Quality Points
-
D (60 - 69) = 1.5 Quality Point
-
F (59 & below) = 0 Quality Points
College Courses:
Dependent on credit hours
-
A (90 - 100) = 5 Quality Points
-
B (80 - 89) = 4 Quality Points
-
C (70 - 79) = 3 Quality Points
-
D (60 - 69) = 2 Quality Points
-
F (59 & below) = 0 Quality Points
Also note college credit hours conversion to high school transcript credits:
Dependent on state board policy CCRE-001
-
1-2 semester credit hours = 0 high school credits
-
2-4 semester credit hours= 1 high school credit
-
5-8 semester credit hours = 2 high school credits
-
9 or more credit hours = 3 high school credits
A student's GPA is the average of the quality points earned for each class. To calculate GPA, students need a list of all the courses they have taken and the final course grades they have earned. With that, they can record and total the quality points earned and then divide by the total number of courses (including failed courses). Here is an example:
Strategies for Academic Success - Grade of 89 = 3.0 Quality Points
Honors Math 1 - Grade of 93 = 4.5 Quality Points
Public Speaking - Grade of 88 = 4.0 Quality Points
Honors Earth Science - Grade of 87 = 3.5 Quality Points
3 + 4.5 + 4 + 3.5 = 15.5 Total Quality Points
15.5 total quality points ➗ 4 courses taken = 3.75 Weighted GPA (unweighted 3.25)
